About Psychedelic Culture 2024 Conference
Since 2015, Chacruna has been at the forefront of organizing large-scale conferences in Mexico, expanding to annual spring events on the West Coast starting in 2018. The Psychedelic Culture 2024 Conference will uphold its commitment to delving into innovative topics that remain on the fringes of the mainstream psychedelic discourse. These topics align with their core initiatives: Indigenous Reciprocity & Decolonial Dialogues, Psychedelic Justice, the Protection of Sacred Plants & Cultural Traditions, and amplifying voices from the Global South.
What to expect?
Over the course of this two-day, in-person event featuring three parallel tracks, Chacruna will host detailed panel discussions and hands-on sessions designed to ignite discussion on a wide range of subjects. These include:
- indigenous perspectives
- biocultural preservation
- the interplay between religion and psychedelics
- the art of conducting ceremonies with awareness
- legal and policy reform
- promoting racial equity and inclusivity
- redefining psychedelics through a queer lens
- recognizing the role of women and veterans in the psychedelic field
- addressing the needs of disabled communities
- sharing insights from the Global South
- critically evaluating psychedelic research and therapy practices, with a focus on ethical concerns such as sexual misconduct
Additionally, participants will have the chance to engage in music and meditation gatherings, as well as partake in rapé (tobacco) ceremonies.
Known for its interdisciplinary approach, Chacruna’s conferences are celebrated for bridging diverse viewpoints, blending scholarly precision with community engagement, activism, and a deep, heartfelt connection. Amidst the ongoing psychedelic renaissance, fostering dialogue between researchers and the communities intimately acquainted with these substances is increasingly vital, ensuring a respectful and knowledgeable stewardship of these practices.
About Chacruna
Founded by Brazilian anthropologist Dr. Bia Labate and American psychologist Dr. Clancy Cavnar, the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines excels in producing and disseminating high-quality research on plant medicines and psychedelics.
Their mission is to make academic insights more widely accessible, educating the public and fostering cultural acceptance to diminish the stigma and legal restrictions surrounding these substances. Chacruna acts as a pivotal connector, linking the realms of traditional plant medicine use with the burgeoning psychedelic science sector, and bridging indigenous ceremonial practices with modern clinical and therapeutic applications.
By incorporating social science perspectives into healthcare, they aim to enlighten professionals and practitioners involved in psychedelic-assisted therapy. Moreover, they encourage cultural and political examination within the psychedelic science domain, initiating dialogue on pressing yet overlooked issues as psychedelics gain popularity in mainstream culture.
