About Breaking Convention

Breaking Convention is a registered UK charity with 3 objectives:

  • Organising and hosting a biennial academic conference bringing together multiple disciplines (including medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology, law, politics and the arts) associated with the research of psychedelic substances
  • Promoting and supporting research on psychedelic substances and the dissemination, and assistance in the dissemination, of the useful results of such research
  • The publication of an academic book based on each conference.

About the Conference

Breaking Convention is Europe’s premier psychedelic consciousness conference and was first launched at the University of Kent in 2011, attracting 500 delegates. Now celebrating its twelfth iteration, the event has evolved into a comprehensive and diverse conference, showcasing the latest pioneering research and perspectives in fields such as the human and social sciences, law, politics, art, history, and philosophy.

“Here and Now: Between the History and Future of Psychedelics” will start by exploring the origins of psychedelic culture, highlighting the role of indigenous beliefs, the influence of figures like Terence McKenna, the significance of rave culture, and insights from the underground scene. Shifting focus from historical context to the conference’s primary emphasis on the present, it will cover the most current clinical research, the burgeoning domain of psychedelic education, and the implications of psychedelics becoming mainstream in contemporary society. After reflecting on the present and honouring our historical foundation, the discussion will venture into the future prospects of psychedelia, considering its impact not only academically but also culturally, sociologically, and philosophically.
