About Dr. Med. Thomas Maximilian Kröber
In my work as a psychiatrist, I have quickly become frustrated with the way in which we professionally deal with mental suffering.
The current approach of reducing mental suffering is usually one of trying to eradicate symptoms and improve functionality in society but without understanding the wisdom and the roots of suffering.
I believe there is an immense intelligence inside our body, no sensation and no emotion ever arises without reason – even if that reason might be something frozen from decades in the past, might have only the most superficial scheme in common with the present moment and might cause an intense amount of pain.
My training as a psychotherapist for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was a welcome change to the medication-focused approach of clinical psychiatry, however, even here I eventually found the work to often be too superficial, too focused on reducing symptoms, not focused enough on truly healing what was crying out to be healed.
Therefore I have tried to integrate whatever approach spoke to me most at the time while trying to reflect on what really works – by the change seen in my patients, and the change seen in myself when I apply the approach to myself. It is my strong belief that nobody can be a truly excellent psychotherapist when they have not done the hard work through trauma to authenticity and self-compassion on themselves and keep on working on it every day.
I have integrated aspects of ACT, DBT, schema therapy, IFS, psychedelic-augmented therapy, hypnotherapy and psychotraumatology into my work and try to stay humble and curious while developing further techniques. In my personal life, I have developed a deeper passion for the non-dual spiritual traditions found in the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, Buddhism as well as the mystical traditions of Christianity, Sufism and the kabbalah. It is deeply important to me however to not impose my worldview on anybody else, but to use whatever perspectives are true for each person to guide them to a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
Dr. Med. Thomas Maximilian Kröber's approach to integration
- Identifying the wounded internal parts that need to be acknowledged, understood and validated
- Identifying the maybe highly aggressive and critical internal parts that cause “unnecessary” suffering and learning to communicate with and integrate them
- Understanding what holds you back (past trauma, attachment issues, unhealthy schemas and routines) from living your life in alignment with how you really want it to be.
- Using insights from altered states of consciousness to move your life in the direction that you want it to go
- Developing practices that keep on connecting you with your real purpose each day
- Developing understanding and embodiment of your authentic self
- Developing a spacious sense of self-love that enables you to be present for the people in your life and enjoy your life as it unfolds now, rather than after some goal in the distant future has been achieved
